How To DVD
The process of knitting on knitting boards originated in the 1500s in the mountain villages of Europe. The technique was passed down through the families, generation to generation. However, when the knitting machine was introduced, knitting boards all but disappeared. Now today, Kim and Pat, a mother/daughter team from the Knitting Board Co., have brought this technique back to a new generation of knitters. | | | Features: | |

Process tedious, hard on your thumbs and wrists.Apr 12, 2011
By SculpterDrach I am brand new to knitting, having just finished making my first scarf on circular needles. I thought loom knitting would be an easy and fast way to learn to make socks. Pros: The loom itself is well made and easily adjusted. The DVD instructions are very clear and simple to follow. Cons: The calculations in the instructions for making socks are way off. Using their formula the cuff I knitted for my sock was at least a third too big around.
For those who have never loom knitted. Process Cons: I found knitting on the loom is very slow compared to knitting on needles. After working on the loom for several hours I did get faster, but not by much. Its very hard on your hands as it takes a lot of force to get the yarn over the pegs. My thumb and wrists were aching after an hour. I had to stop knitting and rest my hands for a half hour before being able to continue. I noticed in the DVD the demonstrator had a padded hook. That may cut down on thumb pain. Too bad the hook included isn't padded. I would not recommend this procuct for anyone with joint problems. It is difficult to keep the stitches loose enough to go over the pegs without dragging off both stitches, especially when using the flat stitch. A dropped stitch is much harder to pick up then on needles. Knitting on the adjustable bar pegs is especially difficult as the side pegs get in the way. I found loom knitting to be such a frustrating, painful and tedious process that I finally quit after 8+ hours with one 2 inch cuff knitted in sock weight yarn.

Nice LoomMar 14, 2011
By Adica I bought this loom from JoAnn's with a 50% off coupon a few months ago, and I love it. This is a very easy-to-use loom, especially with the helpful how-to DVD (though I do find the DVD a bit annoyingly slow-paced at times, but that could be because I'm not new to knitting/loom knitting). I knit and loom knit, but I find that I only have patience for fine gauge knitting on looms because it's quicker, and the stitches are easier for me to work with. That said, once you get the hang of it, you'll probably want to look online (or in Isela Phelps's book on sock looms) to be able to make more than the basic sock. There are many websites out there, including the KB website, that have different sock loom patterns. You'll also probably want to look for a different way to cast on, too, because the only one they teach you is the e-wrap cast on, which is rather loopy.

Great sock knitterFeb 16, 2011
By Crafter I never did master the art of needle knitting, felt like I needed a third hand. The KB Sock Loom is great, it works up just like needle knitting, you can not tell the difference between needle knitting and loom knitting. The KB sock loom makes a smaller gauge than the Knifty Knitter looms. Anyone can work the KB Sock Loom to make socks.

Sizing TroublesNov 23, 2011
By Sara Jacob This is a thoroughly enjoyable time-passer. HOWEVER. I am uncertain about the formula for sizing. The method goes thus: Measure the ball of your foot, with your foot bare and flat against the floor. Multiply by 7, then subtract 15%. Round to the nearest even number, and use that many pegs. By this formula, I need 54 pegs. Non-adjustable sock looms use 52 pegs, with the pegs being the same spacing as the adjustable board, 3/8 inch apart each. (So far as I know). I'm having serious doubts about the size, I think it will be too large. I will probably reduce by 2 to 4 pegs if it is, but it is too soon to really tell.
And yes, the DVD is a bit lacking.

Very pleasedFeb 29, 2012
By ColoradoGal I am quite happy with this loom and have made about 20 pairs of socks since I bought this in December. The first two pairs of socks were just trial socks and while they were still acceptable, weren't as nice as the ones I make now. I feel that the loom is much easier to use for sock making than knitting. When I first started, it took about 30 hours to make a pair of socks. Now I can do a pair in about 14 hours. The loom is small enough to bring anywhere and find I am knitting in the car waiting for kids to come out of school and appointments.
The biggest problem I have with the loom right now is the hard edges. I find that the fleshy part of my hand tends to hurt from holding it on that hard edge. I may go with another loom later on with a rounded edge.
To the person who mentioned not being able to cast on correctly... I've never had a problem with it being too tight. Perhaps that is because I was knifty knitter first so understand how important it is to wrap the first row a little loose. To the lady who mentioned the loopy edge, either do a crochet cast-on stitch or make a rim. If you decide to make a rim on your sock leg, wrap with a loose e-wrap stitch.
Sometimes turning is a little rough but I now increase by bringing up a loop using the purl and keeping the loop on the peg and decrease using the knit stitch. I have never lost a stitch and it saves the stress on my hands.
All and all, I am very pleased with this loom. I can make a sock now in my spare time and it is quick.
My socks are beautiful and I have been wearing them exclusively since my first pair. I love being able to add elastic to the arch of my foot. The only reason I rated it a 4 is because of the hardness on the straight edge.
