I am just going to put it out there: I am cheap and am always looking for a better deal. I don't mind trying generics/off-brands and more times than not, have been rewarded with getting an equally functional item for a much lower price. This isn't the case with combination needle organizers. Any that I found at a lower price didn't seem to accommodate circular knitting needles, or they didn't accommodate the 14" straight needles, or they only held a max of maybe 12 sets of needles, or didn't have a piece of fabric to fold over the top to help prevent all of your needles and crochet hooks from sliding out should the organizer get up-ended. This one fits the bill and more.
* It has 28 pockets:
* 18 are narrow pockets for straight knitting needles, double-pointed needles, and/or crochet hooks. These pockets are about 1-1/2 inches wide by either 5, 8, or 11 inches deep. I have put my dpns and smaller hooks in the bottom/short pockets, my 10" straight needles and medium sized hook (a 9" size I) in the middle/medium pockets, and my 14" straight needles in the top/tall pockets. It even accommodates my pair of 14" size 17 (12.75mm) needles with room to spare
* 10 of the pockets are wide for accommodating circular knitting needles. All are about 5" wide by about 5-1/2" deep, except the bottom two: the last regular pocket is 5" wide by only 5" deep and the zippered one on the bottom is about 4-1/2" wide by 4" deep--this little zippered one is perfect for holding yarn needles, stitch markers, and other tiny notions.
* Overall, this organizer is currently holding 19 sets of knitting needles and 5 crochet hooks and I have room for more.
* It came with little iron-on (or maybe they're sew-on) pocket tags pre-printed with crochet and needle sizes (cr sizes A-N, kn sizes 000-19). Since I'm still playing around with how I'm organizing mine, I haven't tried attaching any to the pockets yet. Instead I used those super-skinny 1.75"x0.5" Avery return labels to mark my pockets until I decide on a permanent org-chart. :)
* I actually dumped this upside-down just to see how many needles would fall out and I only had 2 of my skinnier hooks and 3 dpns slide completely out and onto the floor. Not exactly a scientific test, but it gave me an idea of what kind of mess I could expect if my toddler got ahold of this. I also suspect if I tied the bundle tighter that I might have even less loss of needles.
So, like I said, this is well worth the money to protect and keep your needles and hooks organized in one place (instead of rattling around in the bottom of your knitting bag or sitting at the bottom of your giant plastic tote full of shopping bags full of yarn).
