5I Love it!May 04, 2011

First, I have to say this is an unbelievable bag, both in its design and functionality. I learned to sew using a rotary cutter and mat so I took the extra time and measured (they are all rectangles) all the pattern pieces and cut them out using my rotary cutter. Many of the pieces are cut 4 times, so I found this a much more effective way to cut the pieces. However, labelling them carefully is ESSENTIAL! This pattern calls for a tremendous amount of decorator fabric for the exterior and lining and canvas for stability (I used denim). There is an update on Amy Butler's website that changes the fabric requirements for the exterior and lining to 54" fabric. All in all it takes almost 6 yards of fabric. This is a substantial bag. I made two of these. The first one, I followed the pattern exactly, the second I used cotton quilt fabric on the exterior front and back, but I fused it to another piece of cotton to make it the same weight as the decorator fabric. I used decorator fabric for the rest of the exterior and lining. The second change I made is I eliminated the zipper in the flap (I just didn't need it) and the third change is I eliminated the somewhat funky tab thingy and used velcro fasteners on the flap and front exterior panel instead. One piece of advice, there are several places in the final construction that are really, really thick (I broke a needle), so cutting back some of the layers is really a good idea. I sew with a Juki TL-98Q and if I have a problem, most standard sewing machine are really going to struggle over some of these areas. When I was finished, I was very happy with the bag and I get compliments on it almost every time I carry it.

I adore this bag! Instructions are well written and concise and the final product is just as pictured. The bag is huge, carries everything you need.

I am really happy with the bag that I made from this pattern! I carry it everywhere. This was my first big sewing project, so I was a bit confused about some of the terms and how to use the pattern cut-outs correctly. However, everything turned out really great. This probably shouldn't be your number one choice if you are a total beginner. But it is a great pattern and I'm even planning on making more.

5dutch messenger bag by Amy Butler.Jul 06, 2010

I had to order the pattern somewhere else; ordering from Amazon was not possible from the Netherlands (WHY???). But even for me, without an understanding of yards en inches (Weird!), the bag was easy to make. Well, maybe not that easy but I managed. I made it with fake white leather that had been lying in my attic for 15 (!) years. I can't stop looking at it, I can hardly believe I made it myself. It turned out great and I think I'll make another one soon.
The pattern is very easy to follow. it's absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!
